Starting in 1979 a band led by Tony Cox rang many peals of new surprise major methods and named them after the chemical elements The majority of these peals were rung at Barrow Gurney, though some were rung at various other towers. I believe most or all were rung for the Gloucester and Bristol Association, and that all the methods were devised by Tony.

These methods range from simple to complex. Most are capable of being rung to very musical compositions, with many in particular allowing good music off the front. While some subsets of the methods are variations of on another, taken as a whole they form a varied and interesting collection of methods.

Since they were first rung they have proved enduringly popular. All have been rung again since their first performances, and most at least a half dozen times. Some have been rung over thirty times. Combined, there have been over 800 peals of these methods.

This web page contains compositions for a small selection of these methods. Compositions of these methods in this collection also appear in their natural, alphabetic place among the pages of individual surprise methods. They are also all collected on this page for the convenience of bands that may wish to investigate them as a series.

Also included on this page are a few peals of spliced where all the methods are elements.

Note that there have been more methods rung than there are elements, by using variant names for some of the elements. For example "Plumbum" and "Lead", and "Natrium" and "Sodium." Similarly methods have been named after imaginary elements, such as "Marsium". No distinction between modern and old names, or between real and imaginary elements, are made on this page. They are all viewed as elements here.
